Understanding Your Fertile Window: When Are You Most Likely to Conceive?

Understanding your fertile window is one of the most important aspects of trying to conceive naturally. While many people know that ovulation is key, it can be difficult to know exactly when you are most fertile and how to recognise the signs your body is giving you.

At Surrey Acupuncture Clinic in Surbiton, we support women and couples throughout their fertility journey. Alongside personalised fertility acupuncture, we help patients gain a better understanding of their menstrual cycle so they feel more confident about timing and recognising their body’s natural changes.

Whether you’re just beginning to try for a baby or have been trying for some time, understanding your fertile window can help you feel more informed and in tune with your cycle.

What Is the Fertile Window?

Your fertile window is the period during your menstrual cycle when pregnancy is most likely to occur.

Although an egg survives for only 12–24 hours after ovulation, sperm can survive within the female reproductive tract for up to five days under the right conditions. This means your fertile window usually begins several days before ovulation.

Research suggests that the highest chance of conception occurs during the three days leading up to ovulation, particularly the day before ovulation.

Approximate chances of conception are often quoted as:

  • heart3 days before ovulation – around 27%
  • heart2 days before ovulation – around 33%
  • heart1 day before ovulation – around 41%
  • heartDay of ovulation – around 20%
  • heart1 day after ovulation – around 8%

These figures are averages and will vary between individuals, but they illustrate why timing intercourse before ovulation is generally more effective than waiting until ovulation has already occurred.

A TCM Perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the menstrual cycle is viewed as a dynamic process, with different phases reflecting changes in the body’s energy, Blood and Yin and Yang balance.

Rather than focusing solely on ovulation, TCM considers the whole cycle. Your acupuncture treatment may therefore change from week to week according to your individual presentation and where you are within your menstrual cycle.

How Can You Recognise Ovulation?

Every woman is different, but common signs that ovulation may be approaching include:

  • Changes in cervical mucus
Many women notice cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery and stretchy, often compared to raw egg white. This type of mucus helps sperm move more easily through the cervix.
  • A positive LH test
Ovulation predictor kits detect the rise in luteinising hormone (LH), which usually occurs 24–36 hours before ovulation.
  • Mild ovulation discomfort
Some women experience a slight ache or discomfort on one side of the lower abdomen around ovulation, sometimes referred to as mittelschmerz.
  • Increased libido
Many women notice a natural increase in sexual desire around ovulation due to hormonal changes.
  • Basal body temperature
Your basal body temperature rises slightly after ovulation. While this confirms that ovulation has already occurred, tracking it over several months can help you understand your cycle.

Many women also choose fertility acupuncture as part of their wellbeing routine. At Surrey Acupuncture Clinic, every treatment is tailored to the individual, taking into account your menstrual cycle, health history and personal goals.

Many patients tell us that their appointments provide valuable time to relax and focus on themselves during what can sometimes feel like an emotional and uncertain time.

Timing Intercourse

One of the questions we’re asked most frequently is:
“When should we have sex if we’re trying for a baby?”

For many couples, having intercourse every two to three days throughout the cycle removes some of the pressure of trying to predict ovulation exactly.

If you’re tracking ovulation, many fertility specialists recommend aiming for intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window, particularly in the days leading up to ovulation.

The most important thing is finding an approach that feels manageable and doesn’t add unnecessary stress to your relationship.

For most women, the fertile window lasts around six days—the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.

When is the best time to have sex if we’re trying to conceive?
The highest chance of conception is usually during the two to three days before ovulation, particularly the day before ovulation.

Should we have sex every day?
For many couples, intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window is sufficient. Every couple is different, so choose an approach that feels right for you.

Can I still get pregnant if my cycle isn’t exactly 28 days?

~Mild ovulation discomfort
~Increased libido
~A rise in basal body temperature after ovulation

Wellbeing Tip

Trying to conceive can sometimes make intimacy feel more like a timetable than a relationship.

Remember to spend time together outside of cycle tracking—whether that’s sharing a meal, going for a walk or planning a day out.

Looking after your relationship is an important part of supporting your wellbeing throughout your fertility journey.
