Acupuncture is frequently used to help regulate the menstrual cycle thereby improving ovulation and increasing natural conception. Women who have been diagnosed with PCO, PCOS, Endometriosis, Unexplained fertility, Fibroids and Polyps also benefit from treatment.
At your first appointment we will look at your menstrual cycle in depth and review how each phase of your cycle is working. In treatment we look at Menstruation, Follicular, Ovulation, Luteal phases. We also discuss your Basal Body temperature and whether or not you have signs of ovulation. As well as your menstrual cycle we also take into account your wider health and any stress impacting on your life and wellbeing.
Menstrual cycle –
Phase 1 Menstruation, pituitary signals for production of FSH and LH to stimulate growth of new follicles/eggs. Move blood to ensure lining shed, reduce cramping and clotting
Acupuncture is focussed on ensuring that endometrial lining is shed effectively.
Phase 2 Follicular, oestrogen builds up, thickening the uterus lining and increasing cervical fluid. Improve uterine and ovarian blood flow to aid follicular development, thicken endometrial lining and increase cervical mucus. There should be a drop in Basal Body Temperature (BBT) just before ovulation.
Acupuncture treatment is focussed on building blood in the lower abdomen at the beginning of a new cycle and preparing for ovulation.
Phase 3 Ovulation, Egg released from dominant follicle triggered by surge in LH, cervix open and fertile (SPINN). Aid release of ovum. BBT should rise after ovulation.
Treatment is focussed on the release and clear passage of the egg ready for fertilisation and the growth of uterine lining.
Phase 4 Luteal, progesterone increases and secreted from corpus luteum, progesterone increases body temp, egg travels down fallopian tube after ovulation, if fertilised it will implant into uterus lining. Aid implantation and secure embryo to prevent miscarriage. BBT continues to rise.
Acupuncture focusses on supporting an early pregnancy or if not pregnant, the smooth transition to menstruation including emotional disturbances and night sweats.
During your weekly sessions to enhance your cycle you will be supported with lifestyle, nutrition and exercise advice relevant to your individual health. If you have menstrual cycle irregularities these will be taken into account: advice and treatment will be given on how best to manage them.
